Living in Hope is the first book in the Living
Faith Fully
series.
It takes as its starting point that the Christian message is one
of hope. Each topic explores the traditions of the Catholic Church
through story, ritual and the lived tradition.
Content Outline:
1. Community: searching for meaning
by Bill Jennings
The focus of the first topic is the young person and the special
challenges offered by the world today. The key characteristics of
the age are explored, along with the role of the Church, and the
role of community. This chapter leads into Creation: how the
world began in Book 2, Living
in Harmony.
2. The Liturgical Year: celebrating life
by Jenny OBrien
Just as we celebrate milestones in our own lives, the Churchs
year also celebrates key feasts and seasons. The Liturgical Year
is an introduction to key aspects of the Liturgical year and offers
a broad overview of key feasts and seasons. This chapter leads into
'Religions in Australia: living in community in Book 2, Living
in Harmony.
3. The Bible: the sacred text
by Joe Fleming
This chapter provides an introduction to the Bible, with an emphasis
on the Bible as the sacred text for Christians, the inspired living
word of God.
4. The Old Testament: Gods creative spirit
by Michael Trainor
An introduction to the Old Testament, key people and events. This
chapter leads into The Church: early beginnings in Book
2.
5. Jesus: hope for the world
by Gerard Hall
Rather than focus on the world of Jesus time which is explored
in Book 2, this chapter creates a picture of Jesus as the Son of
God, introducing students to the person of Jesus and giving students
the opportunity to reflect on the relevance of Jesus for today.
6. Sacraments of initiation: celebrating belonging
by Jenny OBrien
This topic has as its special emphasis how the Catholic community
celebrates. The emphasis is on initiation and what it means to be
a community of believers. This chapter leads into The Catholic
Tradition: rites and culture in Living
in Harmony.
7. Morality: making choices
by James McEvoy
Good times and bad times are part of life. This topic explores how
we cope with hardship, and what the Christian message offers. The
key themes of despair and hope are explored along with the resilience
of the human spirit. This chapter leads into Morality: making
choices in Book 2.
8. Prayer: being a spiritual person
by Beth Nolen
Prayer is an integral part of the Christian life, and this chapter
provides an introduction to what it means to be a spiritual person
in todays world.
9. Mission: a people for the world
by Beth Gilligan
Living in Hope finishes with a focus on the importance of
Christians as bringing hope through a sense of outreach and mission.
This generation as a witness to the next is a key aspect of this
chapter.

Joe Fleming
lectures in Religious Education and Theology at ACU, Christ Campus,
Melbourne. He has taught in Catholic secondary schools and worked
at the CEO as an RE consultant.
Beth
Gilligan is an education consultant, with experience

Fr Gerard Hall lectures in Scripture and Theology
at ACU, McAuley Campus, Brisbane.
