Content Outline:
1. Community: searching for meaning
by Bill Jennings

The focus of the first topic is the young person and the special challenges offered by the world today. The key characteristics of the age are explored, along with the role of the Church, and the role of community. This chapter leads into ‘Creation: how the world began’ in Book 2, Living in Harmony.

2. The Liturgical Year: celebrating life
by Jenny O’Brien

Just as we celebrate milestones in our own lives, the Church’s year also celebrates key feasts and seasons. The Liturgical Year is an introduction to key aspects of the Liturgical year and offers a broad overview of key feasts and seasons. This chapter leads into 'Religions in Australia: living in community’ in Book 2, Living in Harmony.

3. The Bible: the sacred text
by Joe Fleming

This chapter provides an introduction to the Bible, with an emphasis on the Bible as the sacred text for Christians, the inspired living word of God.

4. The Old Testament: God’s creative spirit
by Michael Trainor

An introduction to the Old Testament, key people and events. This chapter leads into ‘The Church: early beginnings’ in Book 2.

5. Jesus: hope for the world
by Gerard Hall

Rather than focus on the world of Jesus’ time which is explored in Book 2, this chapter creates a picture of Jesus as the Son of God, introducing students to the person of Jesus and giving students the opportunity to reflect on the relevance of Jesus for today.

6. Sacraments of initiation: celebrating belonging
by Jenny O’Brien

This topic has as its special emphasis how the Catholic community celebrates. The emphasis is on initiation and what it means to be a community of believers. This chapter leads into ‘The Catholic Tradition: rites and culture’ in Living in Harmony.

7. Morality: making choices
by James McEvoy

Good times and bad times are part of life. This topic explores how we cope with hardship, and what the Christian message offers. The key themes of despair and hope are explored along with the resilience of the human spirit. This chapter leads into ‘Morality: making choices’ in Book 2.

8. Prayer: being a spiritual person
by Beth Nolen

Prayer is an integral part of the Christian life, and this chapter provides an introduction to what it means to be a spiritual person in today’s world.

9. Mission: a people for the world
by Beth Gilligan

Living in Hope finishes with a focus on the importance of Christians as bringing hope through a sense of outreach and mission. This generation as a witness to the next is a key aspect of this chapter.
